Why Climate.Studio?

The world is facing significant challenges, of a type and complexity not previously known. Climate change is an existential crisis. We use New Kind of Design (#NKD) principles and practices to avoid problems of traditional scope and scale narrowing. This approach leads to new kinds of thinking, and often extreme but meaningful takes on problems and opportunities.

Who designed the Climate.Studio Totes?

The Climate.Studio Totes, Context (01) and Context (02) were designed by J. Paul Neeley (b. 1978) who is an American Designer based in London and graduate of the Royal College of Art. For the past decade his design practice has focused on unpacking complexity and understanding the future impact of emerging technologies in the world, with a focus on the existential threat of climate change.

What is the purpose of the Climate.Studio Totes?

Accepted Answer

The first step to addressing global warming is to acknowledge the severity and scale of the problem, and then to personally connect all of our own individual daily actions, conversations, and behaviours to this issue. Declarations of context help frame all of our actions within this existential crisis. The goal of the project is to bring awareness to the cause, and create an opportunity for the 1% to make personal and public declarations of context to this effect.

How are the funds from the Climate.Studio Tote used?

Accepted Answer

Funds generated through the sales of these artworks, after payment of appropriate taxes, will be used for climate action. A portion of the funds will be used to support design practices addressing Climate Change mitigation and adaptation activities. A portion will support organizations fighting global warming. A portion will support the training and practice of future generations of designers, thinkers, and makers.

Why is the Climate.Studio Tote so expensive?

These designs attempt to price in a symbolic cost of unmitigated climate change, and the 1%’s contribution to these challenges through their spending and lifestyle and externalities of capitalist activity, and the power of the 1% to create impact. The price puts this kind of personal ownership and statement exclusively in the hands of those with a wealth that was generated through the exploitative system that got us here.

Who is buying these Tote Bags?

Accepted Answer

The Context (01) and Context (02) pieces are specifically designed for those in the 0.1% and 1% whose lifestyles and consumption are generally the most incompatible with the global need for emissions reductions, and whose power and capacity for impact is exponentially greater than billions of others on the planet. We are also open to discuss purchase of the work by museums and other cultural institutions.
